Prescription painkiller tramadol ‘claiming more lives than any other drug’

Tramadol is a prescription painkiller which is commonly used by millions of people on a daily basis. A renowned pathologist from Northern Ireland claims that this painkiller it’s taking more lives that heroin and cocaine, or any other drug for that matter.

It should be noted that if the drug is taken correctly, it doesn’t pose a health concern, however the damage happens when people mix it with alcohol or other drugs.

In Northern Ireland, just last year, 33 people died from complications associated with tramadol. Among the people who died were an elderly person in his 70ties and a teenager girl, age 16.

Professor Jack Crane, the State Pathologist for Northern Ireland warns about the dangers of this drug and says that the fact that it’s a prescription drug makes people believe it’s safe. They fail to realize how dangerous it can be if taken incorrectly.

Tramadol is an opiate-based drug which is mostly prescribed for severe to moderate pain. It’s a prescription only drug, illegal for sale without a prescription since 2014 when it was reclassified into a Class C drug.

However, according to anti-drug campaigners, this has only forced people to buy it on the black market.

Professor Jack Crane spoke out to warn that the number of people dying from Tramadol complications is only going to get higher if there’s no immediate action taken in this direction. He calls out for a total crackdown on the market of illegal drugs that will shut it down once and for all.

He suggests that it would be better that tramadol is upgraded into Class A once again and he’s set to meet with the Chief Medical Officer of Northern Ireland this month to demand this upgrade.
